Beyond the Visual: A Storytelling Workshop Series for Designers

This past month, we wrapped up Beyond the Visual, a four-part workshop series we co-hosted with Women in Design NYC and Parsons School of Design. Each session explored the art of storytelling—not just as a soft skill, but as a powerful tool to elevate how we communicate our design work.

From speaking and writing to structure and second languages, the workshops created space to step outside our comfort zones, practice new techniques, and rethink how we present ideas. Whether it’s pitching to a client, sharing a concept with a team, or writing about our work, storytelling is a vital part of the design process—one that’s often overlooked.

Throughout the series, we had the chance to learn from an incredible group of facilitators:

  • Maggie Ollove led a session on how to craft stories that connect audiences to your work’s purpose and potential—reminding us that design doesn’t always speak for itself.
  • Isis Shiffer followed with a workshop on presenting with confidence, offering practical tools for calming nerves, structuring a talk, and holding a room’s attention.
  • Divya Chaurasia took us through a hands-on writing session, helping us break through creative blocks (with the help of a few penguins).
  • Rina Shin closed out the series with an insightful look into multilingual communication, reminding us that it’s not about speaking more languages—it’s about making others feel included and understood.

Every session was a reminder that great design goes far beyond the visual. It’s about the story we tell and how we choose to tell it.

A huge thank you to our collaborators - Women in Design NYC, Parsons school of Design, and everyone who joined us along the way—especially those who braved the mic, shared their work, and made the room feel warm and welcoming.

Until next time!
